Top Ten Tuesday: U is for Ugly

I’ve never read the book Backwards Beauty, but the short videos are pretty funny.

The author of Backwards Beauty, Jessie Minassian, takes a satirical approach to showing girls, “You have a beauty the world doesn’t understand.”   After listening to her interview a few years ago on Focus on the Family, I came to appreciate her “completely illogical” approach to to teaching girls to view themselves through God’s eyes.  She gives her readers “10 steps to feel your worst!”

Since I’m not as creative as Minassian, I’ll just share 5 steps to help you feel your best.

Ten Verses for When You Feel Ugly

Step one: Remember Whose you are.

1. Psalm 100:3

Know that the Lord, he is God!

It is he who made us, and we are his;

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Step two: Remember that His works are great.

2. Psalm 111:2

Great are the works of the Lord,
studied by all who delight in them.

3. Psalm 139:14

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works;     my soul knows it very well.

Step three: Remember Who you reflect.

4. Genesis 1:26-27

Then God said, “Let us make man[a] in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;  male and female he created them.

Step four: Remember that He cares for you.

5. Matthew 6:28-30

And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

6. Matthew 10:30

But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

Step five: Remember that real beauty is internal.

7. I Peter 3:3-4

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

8. Luke 16:15

And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

9. Proverbs 31:30

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

10. I Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
