Generally speaking, I still feel like a teenager. Sure, I’m in grad school, I have a full-time job, and I pay my own rent, but when someone asks me my age, I respond, “eightee–I mean, twenty-three.”
Whether you are young-in-age or young-at-heart, strive to obey God’s six specific instructions for youth.
Ten Verses for Those Who are Young
First, God desires for youth to be obedient.
1. Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Second, God desires for youth to be pure.
2. I Timothy 4:12
Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
3. Psalm 119:9
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
Third, God desires for youth to be self-controlled.
4. Titus 2:4-6
and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.
5. 2 Timothy 2:22
So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
6. 2 Peter 1:5-8
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Fourth, God desires for youth to be content.
7. Ecclesiastes 11:9
Young people, enjoy yourselves while you are young;
be happy while you are young.
Do whatever your heart desires,
whatever you want to do.
But remember that God will judge you
for everything you do.
8. Ecclesiastes 12:1
Remember your Creator
while you are young,
before the days of trouble come
and the years when you say,
“I find no pleasure in them.”
Fifth, God desires for youth to be eager to learn.
9. Proverbs 1:8-9
Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching,
for they are a graceful garland for your head
and pendants for your neck.
Sixth, God desires for youth to be diligent.
10. Lamentations 3:27
It is good for someone to work hard
while he is young.
