Then you should celebrate World Book Day next Tuesday!

While the obvious way to celebrate World Book Day is to read a book, I do have another option for my more artistic friends.

I do not exaggerate when I say that this is the easiest artwork ever!  All you need is Google, a printer, and a marker.

To begin, print (or photocopy) a page from a favorite book.  I Googled “The Bad Beginning First Page” and “Alice in Wonderland Page” to find the two examples that I am using today.  Once I found my pages, I printed them in black and white.

I read the pages several times, and, on a separate sheet of paper, I wrote the words and phrases that I found meaningful.  For the Alice in Wonderland example, these words were go anywhere, a different person then, adventure, and courage. I then found other words on the page that would help form sentences.  I outlined all of these words in black marker.

In the gaps between my outlined words, I doodled curly-cues.  A simple Google search for “Blackout Poetry” will give you some other options for this artwork.  Some artists draw images that correspond with the book.  Other people simply color the rest of the page black.  It’s completely up to you!

And you’re done!  Like I said, blackout poetry is an incredibly simple art project and a perfect way to celebrate your favorite books.

Let me know in the comments:

  • Do you consider yourself artistic?
  • What is your favorite book?

P.S. I am linking up with Angie and her cohost Antonia @ for Fiesta Friday.

  1. People around me think I’m artistic, but I myself think I’m just so so. I do enjoy painting, sketching, that kind of stuff 😀 This is definitely an activity I would enjoy very much. And I would do it on either a Harry Potter book or Little House on the prairie, two of my favorites.
