Simple Joy Saturday #20

Every Saturday I share three simple things that brought me happiness during the week.  These posts may grow or evolve as time passes.  Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section!

1. A snow day!

The weathermen predicted “accumulation less than 1 inch.”  The flurries were supposed to start at 3 am on Wednesday and last for a few hours.  Instead, the heavy snow started at 5 am and continued all day.

2. And another snow day!

Since the temperature stayed below freezing point, the roads were still unsafe on Thursday.

3. Sleep

Sometimes it’s underrated 😴

I Already Broke My New Years Resolution

I Already Broke My New Years Resolution

january

I thought that it was a good, attainable resolution.  The plan was to run a 10k on April 22, the day after I finish student teaching.  Ten kilometers is less than 6.5 miles, so it really isn’t that hard of a run, and I have nearly four months to prepare.  I printed off a mild training guide (3 days of running, 2 days of cross-training, and 2 days of rest every week), and I filled out the application for the race.

The first week went really well.  I did every single workout, getting decent times on my runs.  I hit a set-back at the beginning of week two when the world was covered in snow, but I was still determined to keep at it.

Then yesterday came, Friday of week two, and I did NOT want to go to the gym.  I did not want to run on a treadmill.  I wanted to skip my workout.

So I started to analyze why:

  • I was tired.  However, most people are tired, so I didn’t count that as a valid excuse.
  • I felt rushed.   Every day after student teaching, I had to rush to the gym, change quickly, and run as fast as I could so that I could make it to supper on time.
  • I didn’t enjoy the runs.  In fact, I would run on the treadmill overlooking the pool and think about how much I would rather be swimming.
  • I missed my old workouts.  I missed swimming, Pop Pilates, Zumba, and slow jogs through Old Salem.

I gave in.  I didn’t go to the gym.  I didn’t run.  Instead, I went to my dorm room and wrote lesson plans.

I didn’t completely throw yesterday’s workout to the wolves.  Later last night, I did  PIIT while watching Chopped, and it was great.  It was relaxing, fun, and everything that a workout should be.  I even went to the gym this morning…to swim, and it was everything that I missed.

Yes, I broke my New Year’s Resolution, but I am glad that I did.

…in an ironic turn of events, a blog hat I frequent just posted, “92% of people fail to maintain their fitness resolutions be the end of the year.”  At least I am in good company 🙂

It’s Not That Far: Christmas Afternoon at Sleeping Giant

It’s Not That Far: Christmas Afternoon at Sleeping Giant

Carols were sung, presents were opened, and Christmas lunch had been enjoyed.  With a quick glance at the clock, we knew that we had enough time to hike at Sleeping Giant State Park.  According to Brother, the trail was about the length of the trail at Pilot Mountain, so we grabbed some water bottles and hopped in the car.

As we were approaching exit 59 on Wilbur Cross Parkway, we noticed that traffic was moving slowly up ahead, but we continued towards the tunnel.

Then we stopped.  Traffic was literally parked on the parkway for over an hour.  Some people started heading the wrong way down the entrance ramp; others started making u-turns in the grass.  One man even managed to cut off three people in stand-still traffic, and a lady got out of her car to yell at him.

Yet, we also saw much Christmas cheer.  I honestly don’t remember the last time I laughed that hard with my family.  Other families even began distributing Christmas cookies!

Much later than expected, we arrived at Sleeping Giant and raced against the clock to hike to the top.  Although Brother compared the trail to Pilot Mountain, which is described as a “moderate relatively flat 0.8 mile loop,” the trail we walked was closer to that of Hanging Rock (a 1.3-mile one-way trail).  It almost felt like we ran to the top, took some pictures, and speed-walked to the bottom.

…and any time Mom asked how far we were from the top, Brother’s reply was, “It’s not that far.”

Local weather forecast for the next three days-

  • Monday: 30 degrees, snow to freezing rain
  • Tuesday: 52 degrees, morning rain
  • Wednesday: 53 degrees, sunny

This is why North Carolina is so great.

Since this is my third winter on campus, I have taken pictures of most of the buildings and surroundings in snow.  Other than the obligatory pictures of red berries in snow, I tried to focus on capturing unique patterns that the snow created.
